Location: Mayuge District, Uganda
Comrades to Youths Africa: Solar Installation Impact Report, August 2024
- Rooftop solar system for Mayuge Hill Sec. School
- Two solar lanterns for Solar Educate program
- Collaborated on the design of a Solar Baseline Survey that can be customized for educational as well as community solar programs
- Reliable solar power for approx. 150 students to read and study after dark
- Reliable power source for teachers to charge devices, support research and enhance teaching methodologies
- Co-benefits include fostering a more sustainable and empowered learning environment
This is our first project in collaboration with Comrades to Youths Africa (C2YA), an NGO in Uganda focused on student empowerment and sustainability education for youth. We first worked with C2YA, a fellow Climate Solutions Round grantee, on designing a baseline survey for students participating in their Solar Educate Program. We also provided input into the design of their solar course along with two solar lanterns to help students learn more about how solar power provides free energy from the sun for productive use appliances.
In July 2024, we funded a rooftop solar system for one of the schools where C2YA is implementing their Eshule program, Mayuge Hill Secondary School in Mayuge District, Uganda. The school serves approximately 150 students and has an unreliable power infrastructure with interruptions. and limitations that impact the overall educational environment.
"The provision of solar panels ensures that these children have access to a well-lit environment as well as night-time studying. This facilitates extended study hours and creates a conducive atmosphere for learning and academic achievement." - Pius Isabirye, founder, C2YA
At the Solar Foundation, we have seen how small solar solutions often result in exponential ripples of impact. We look forward to learning more about the impact and outcomes of our first partnership with C2YA and this first solar solution for Mayuge Hill Secondary School.
